Oregon 400T Screen Review: The 3 inch screen of the Garmin Oregon 400T is fantastic.  It is a full touch screen which has its advantages and disadvantages.  It makes it easy to use but in an outdoor environment, you will find your screen getting dirty quickly.  The 2D and 3D abilities of this GPS are not only useful but really fun to use.

If you enjoy the outdoors whether it be hiking, climbing, camping, hunting or anything else, the Garmin Oregon 400T will help guide your way.  There are various modes on the Oregon 400T including automotive, marine, geocaching, fitness and recreation.  There is also a built-in compass to point you the right direction.

Garmin is typically the household name of GPS and they have done a phenomenal job with the Oregon 400T. As one of the premier handheld GPS systems, the Oregon 400T is on the higher end at $600 but has the features and quality to match.  You can pick up a cheaper handheld GPS system but you won’t find one quite like the Oregon 400T.

Not Back To School, a list of things to stop asking school aged children

It’s that time again- back to school time. As a mom of a just barely 5yo who will homeschool (for now at least), we’ve never been “off to school” so we can’t exactly go “back to school” either. But for the most part, Teylor’s friends are all starting back to school this week or next, and her papa works at a Charter School here, which brings us to that one question all adults seem inclined to ask any child that appears school-age: “have you started school yet?”

Sometimes it’s phrased as “where do you go to school?” or “is she in school?” but for the most part, it seems aimed at discerning if I as a parent am doing my part to ensure my child’s success is as bright as it can be (because obviously we parents have to keep eachother in check on this matter), that I’m doing my apparent civic duty, and that my quiet child gets socialized properly because otherwise she will never be forced to act normally. Sometimes this question is aimed as a mere conversation starter with my daughter but for the life of me I don’t know why- many, many children don’t ENJOY school- it’s seen as a responsibility, sure, or a requirement, (there are always exceptions), and it’s not something most children choose for themselves, it’s not even an institution most adults reflect fondly upon as their own experiences perhaps were difficult or scary or they were bullied. I can relate.

I just don’t get it. Do adults have such difficulty interracting with younger children that the only thing they can think to ask them these days is about school? Is it all we remember of our own childhoods? For the most part, I would say yes, it defined many of us and shaped us dramatically. And yet it’s not even like all schools are equally good or bad. And the only *wrong* answer I have ever heard to the back-to-school questions is ours: “we’re homeschooling.”

Reply with an explanation of your homeschooling philosophies or just the simple statement above, and you’re sure to be judged or receive blank stares. A neighbor mom even said to me yesterday when she asked if Teylor was starting school and I explained, happily, that we are homeschooling, “but why? is she not very bright?”

At first I thought I had misunderstood her and then I was just too stunned to say anything else. And yet my own child is bright, and colorful, and happy- just quiet.

She doesn’t need to be sent to school so she can be broken of her bad habit of quietness, certainly, and she doesn’t need to go to school to learn to read or write because she’s taught herself those skills already. If and when we send her to school it will be because it’s the right thing for us, and it will be a mutual decision.

I’d like to make a list of the top things you should never ask school aged children. Will you help me? Leave your suggestions in the comments.

I will start with Number one: “are you in school?” because really, that just shows you’re not even trying, and implies that you don’t think kids do anything except school, which is just depressing. If they say “no,” (which is what I’ve told Teylor she should start replying with) what are you going to do then? Hah!

Death of a child

Parents and family members alike often struggle after the death of a child.

Hi, my name is Laura a mother who has had to deal with the death of a child twice out of a large family of ten – six boys and four girls.

I loss my thirty-six year old daughter to a life long battle with tumors. The first one was located and removed from her brain and than another that later developed on her spine. All of this we went through from the age of seventeen.

I also loss my baby son when he died fatally at the age of twenty-five when his best friend went to sleep at the wheel. Losing a child or the death of a child is a very, very emotional deal not only for the parents but every family member.

A mom’s love is something that not one person can truly explain. It is one that is made of deep devotion, many willing sacrifices, and loving care. But regardless of everything that motherhood encompasses, nothing can and will ever prepare you for the death of a child.

Many say that you can recover and that time heals all wounds when it comes to the death of a child. Maybe so, but truly without the help and support of family and friends and a lot of praying, how would I have made it through?

Getting an unexpected phone call or knock on your door to tell you that your child has gone on before you or waking up to find that another child’s long battle with her health has finally come to an end.

Losing one or two of your children can leave a big hole in your heart that never seems to close. It is one that can if your faith is not strong make you wonder, why?

Why me and why my family? But with the help of the Lord, the pain can and will start to ease. I am willing to live again even though the memories of those days are still fresh and they may be the same for you.

In my mind, my family is simply the best and the love shown to them each day even as they are grown is one they never doubt. We have our ups and our downs, our calm days and our battle days but when it comes down to it, we’re there for each other.

That’s why it hurt me to not lose one but two at young ages.

I have always lived my life for them, even now! But I tell them quite the opposite, to try to have a life for yourself and do not give up on your life just because you have become a parent because life is too short and after the child’s life, there is still yours.

Don’t get me wrong there isn’t a day or night that goes by that I don’t miss my other two children that are gone.

I do not hate the child who lived or his family because the Lord would not let me. He told me that this child has family and his family loves him too. I asked the Lord to hold my hand and he has been doing that every since and he will do the same thing for you if you will just ask to be relieve of the grief and pain.

I took very good care of my daughter all the way up until the end. We had a lot of time to talk and do many things together even though the doctor kept telling me she was getting weaker.

I didn’t want my child to be placed into a convalescent home or for her siblings to give up their life and so I prayed. I had mixed feelings about this until it came to me that the Lord does not always answer the way we would like. And still I Pray!

Let’s now examine the old myth of a once uneducated society! Statistically it has always been said, if you are being physically abused to seek help and get out now!

On the other hand for those who were being emotionally abused, it was quite the opposite. You have probably heard some high up officials say to you or someone you love, words don’t hurt, do you believe what you hear, as long as you are not being hit, or I’m sure this will be just one incident.”

Are those true facts that words don’t hurt when it comes to womens health?

If that holds some truth at all, then does it only become physical abuse when a bruised eye or other body part becomes obvious to others? What about a person being emotionally abused?

Does it only become emotional abuse when you whole-heartedly start to believe in what you are being told by the abuser?

Really there is absolutely no difference on the affects of womens health when it comes to abuse. Please consider these thoughts for a minute.

Any woman who is said to be going through physical abuse also goes through emotional abuse with every kick, push, or hit that’s encountered. Ask them what were their abuser saying?

You would learn that they were also using words! You would learn that they were also using words whether spoken or not! Ask any abused person and they would probably say, that person must have hated me because of the way they treated me and those around me.

Now go through that same thought provoking process for the emotionally abused woman. A woman who is said to be going through any type of emotional abuse also experiences physical abuse with every spoken word that strikes the emotions. It too leaves bruises and scars affecting a womens health.

Abuse is not only an illness that can kill one physically but also one that can and will kill anyone who goes through it, whether short or long term, emotionally. So are the affects on womens health really any different?

Parents of an autism child or any other special need child can assist their child in having a vibrant life as you will learn from the story told by these parents.

In January of 2000 my husband Sterling and I had our first baby. A baby boy, his name is Asher. We knew that our lives would never be the same again!

Excited to experience the joys of parenting, Sterling and I spent all of our free time playing with, loving, and pampering our little angel. Asher was a sweet baby, too. He was so mild and mellow. Yes, we felt very blessed! The only time Asher ever seemed to get upset was when there was too much commotion.

After adjusting to his needs, we learned how to sooth him during these emotional outbreaks. Sterling and I had no idea that these adjustments would become a normal occurrence in our lives. As Asher grew, we recognized that he had his little quirks.

We actually thought that his meticulousness was cute! Asher would often spend time arranging his cars and blocks into perfect lines or circles. Our child is a genius we would say! My husband and I were sure that this was a sign of his potential. Of course, there was the minor detail that he didn’t speak . . . at all. Maybe he was just a quiet child. After all, he was still very laid back.

By the time Asher turned 2, the only words that he could say were, uh oh. We were beginning to worry. We had Asher tested by a local early intervention program called Kids On the Move. We were sure Asher would qualify, because of his speech delay.

My husband and I were not prepared for the results that they gave us. After learning that Asher had PDD-NOS, an Autism Spectrum Disorder, my husband and I went through the emotions of realizing that our baby would struggle with many things in his life.

The journey ahead was a hard but rewarding one. Asher was so eager to work and please everyone His efforts were incredible. When Asher turned 3, he was released from Kids on the Move and sent to an early intervention program in our school district.

It was devastating the first time I had to put my baby boy on the big school bus all by himself. I had a hard time watching complete strangers drive off with my little person. During the early days I had to continuously take inventory on my adequacy as a mother. Was I a terrible mother? How could I do this to my baby? Was this the right thing to do?

Asher is five now and has started speaking . . . A LOT actually!! People still have a hard time understanding him but Sterling and I just beam with joy when we remember where he started. Asher is preparing to transition to kindergarten this fall. This is a huge turning point for Asher and we are so proud of him. He has overcome so many obstacles to get to this point.

When people ask me how I do it, I tell them I have no choice! You would be amazed at the mountains you can climb when you have to get to the other side. It took a major group effort to get Asher to this point but he was more than worth it. We want Asher to have the best chance the world can give him!

Single parenting

Single parenting can best be described as one of the most challenging experiences that can only be told by a single mom possibly just like you.

Like most women, I’ve always dreamed of the day that I would hear congratulations you are a mother. Getting the opportunity to have a family of my own whether it was one of my own or through adopting someone else’s child.

Admittedly though, I was a little frightened but mostly excited about the possibility of becoming a mother. But little did I know that this process of motherhood would be shared without the child’s dad and that I would be classified as a single mother.

It seems that just as soon as my pregnancy was confirmed, the morning sickness set in and the problems with my partner began. In the beginning, I could not stand to smell anything it seemed. Morning sickness is definitely an understatement.

And ooh my goodness; sleep would come on at anytime. Just as soon as my newly shaped mommy butt would hit a comfortable spot on a sofa or bed, off to sleep I would go. The morning sickness got so bad that I almost gave up completely on food and anything that smelled like food.

Finally around my seventh month, things began to slowly ease up with the morning sickness but the tension between my partner and myself never did seem to get any better. I think that is what caused the strain in the relationship, he never really got use to the idea of becoming a father and it really started to show the closer the end of term came for the pregnancy.

Then around the eight month, another set of problems began to set in with the pregnancy. My doctors became quite concerned because my blood pressure was up and down like an adult roller coaster. My doctors started me on a treatment plan to stop this but in the end I had to be hospitalized.

My physician was worried about the affect my blood pressure would have on the baby and you know it was putting me in danger as well. I was in the hospital a little over a week before my son was born. There were so many machines and tubes that made my pregnancy suddenly became scarier than ever.

By then they had me pumped so full of meds that giving birth was the easy part but realizing that the child’s father was still a no show for the birth or recovery was the hardest part. We still had a long way to go because by now, he too had developed complications.

Thanks to the Lord, my parents and my immediate family, we are making it as mother and son. Giving new life is a mixed blessing because you do not really know how things will go for you or the relationships that you create with others. So all we can do as single mothers is get support from others and trust we’re making the right decisions as parents.

I did not know that I would be going through the experience of motherhood without the child’s father but regardless of how it all ended, I realized that my child has the best mother and father there is and that is ME.

The underlying conditions which induce the unpleasant throat vibrations known as “snoring” can vary to a great extent.
